Yahztee! A.J.H 29/10/93
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Righto, this is a little game-thang I knocked up a while ago because I was
bored. It's a reasonable desktop version of the classic dice game Yahtzee!
Rules
~~~~~
Each player has three rolls of five dice. On the first roll, all five dice
are rolled. On the two subsequent rolls, the player may 'hold' any dice
they so desire.
The object of the game is to score as many points as possible by rolling
certain 'combinations' with the dice:
Combination Scores Explanation
Ones Total 1s Scores the total of the '1's showing in the dice
Twos Total 2s ditto but for 2s
: : :
Sixes Total 6s ditto but for 6s
Full House 25 A full house is a prial and a pair, eg. 22444
3 of a kind Total Spots Any three dice alike; scores total spots showing
4 of a kind Total Spots Likewise for any four dice alike
Lo Straight 30 Any four dice 'in a row' eg, 12346 or 13456 etc.
Hi Straight 40 Likewise, but all five dice in a row
Yahtzee 50 /100 All five dice alike (first 50, second+ 100)
Chance Total Spots Anything at all.
Each player may score in each combination once. [If you score 0 (blank), the
game will show '-' in the scorecard.] Yahtzee is the only exception; you may
score as many yahtzee's as you roll (the second and subsequent yahtzees score
100 points each), but for each yahtzee after the first you must choose a
combination to 'blank' ie. score 0 in. Note that if you've blanked a
combination (either by scoring 0 in it or after a 2nd yahtzee) you cannot
score in it again! It's no good blanking yahtzee and then rolling one...
The 'Bonus' score is a fixed score of 35 awarded if you score 63 or more
in the 'top' section (ie. 1s,2s,3s,4s,5s & 6s). A little maths reveals that
to secure your bonus you need 3 1s, 3 2s, 3 3s, 3 4s, 3 5s, and 3 6s, or
better. The bonus can be critical to winning a game.
The game continues until all combinations have been filled. At that point,
the winner is the person with the highest score.
Desktop Yahtzee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Support is provided for between 1 and 4 players. Select the number of players
you want and then click 'start'. A window will appear showing a score card and
five dice. Prompts appear at the bottom of the window.
By the side of the dice are some 'option' icons (tick boxes), these are used
to 'hold' the dice.
A sample turn:
Click Throw (throws the dice initially)
Select dice to hold (ticked dice are held)
Click Throw (throws the unheld dice)
Select dice to hold (un hold, hold as required)
Click Throw (throws the unheld dice)
Click on the space on the scorecard you wish to fill. (You can only click
in your column, and scoring is automatic)
The 'Keep' icon may be used after your first and second throws if you're happy
with the dice as thrown and therefore don't want to throw them again.
The game is fairly sensible and will ignore clicks anywhere they shouldn't be.
To Font or not to Font
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Under RiscOS2 yahtzee will use standard 2d templates.
Under RiscOs3 3d templates will be used by default.
Also, if you run the game in a 'hi-res' mode, the game will use outline fonts
for the windows, otherwise the system font will be used.
Some people don't like fonts. Fair enough, they do slow things down a bit,
therefore you can edit the !Run file to expressly refuse the use of fonts.
Similarly you may not want 3d windows under RO3 (hey, they slow it up *soo*
much), so you can hold down the Ctrl key whilst the game loads, and presto
2d windows with no fonts. Call me old fashioned, but even in hires modes under
RO3, I still prefer the good ol' 2d-no-fonts windows.
Oh yeah, depending on the resolution of the mode you load the game in, hires
dice will be used. Yeah.
That's about it.
